Synthesis of thermodynamically unstable and powerfully oxidizing fluorides
- Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, CA (United States)
By capturing F from complex anions (e.g. NiF{sub 6}{sup 2{minus}} in anhydrous HF (AFH) using powerful F acceptors (e.g. BF{sub 3} or AsF{sub 5}) it is possible to precipitate the thermodynamically unstable parent binary fluoride (e.g. NiF{sub 4}). From NiF{sub 4}, high purity NiF{sub 3} can be obtained at {minus}10{degrees}C from AHF supersaturated with BF{sub 3}. The dry solid is kinetically stable at ordinary temperatures and the rhombohedral cell and magnetic properties are consistent with Ni{sup 2+}[NiF{sub 6}]{sup 2}. AgF{sub 3}, derived from AgF{sub 4} with BF{sub 3} in AHF, oxidizes O{sub 2} to O{sub 2}{sup +} at -75{degrees}C, in AHF with AsF{sub 5}. Ag{sup 2+} (in AHF) will also oxidize O{sub 2} and O{sub 2} salts) are powerful oxidizers and may be metallic conductors. All show temperature independent paramagnetism over a wide temperature range.
