The National Ignition Facility (NIF) was based on a Nd:glass laser capable of generating 1.8 MJ. While this Nd:glass laser system would be > 10 times more energetic than any existing system, the laser light nevertheless began with only 1 nanojoule from the master oscillator (i.e., ~10-9 J was amplified to ~106 J). The master oscillator output pulse was raised to the final required energy through a series of amplifier stages, one of which was a diode pumped regenerative laser. The purpose of this CRADA was to assist Lightning Optical Corporation (LOC) in commercializing one of the crucial optical components employed in the diode pumped regenerative amplifier.
