This project was a collaborative effort between the University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Orange County Water District (OCWD) to study the efficiency and performance of new carbon aerogel electrode materials for Capacitive Deionization Technology (CDT). The CDT process was applied to treatment of (desalination of) Colorado River water from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) La Verne treatment plant, and municipal wastewater from the OCWD Water Factory 21 reclamation facility. LLNL delivered two capacitive deionization (CDT) systems to the Orange County Water District (OCWD) for a joint field/laboratory evaluation. The systems were fully equipped with testing and control equipment and require only water and power hookups. Each includes one 150-cell electrochemical stack of a standard LLNL design, consisting of 4-inch x 8-inch carbon aerogel electrodes with titanium current collectors. Supporting equipment include two conductivity meters, two multimeters, a power supply and a chart recorder/ plotter. Each stack contains about 600 g of high-surface-area carbon aerogels with the electrosorption capacity of approximately 3.5 g of TDS per cycle (equivalent to complete deionization of approximately 7 liter of 500-ppm CRW per purification cycle). In addition, four more stacks were added (as a loan) to increase the total deionization capacity. All systems were evaluated and calibrated with saline water (Colorado river water) provided by Metropolitan Water District La Vern facility.
