Cyclic voltammetry of the examined fulvalene complex shows a distinction between the two metals upon reduction, and this differentiation has been exploited synthetically. Ligand substitution is effected selectively at the iron center via electron-transfer chain catalysis to give novel zwitterionic products. The mechanism and scope of the reaction will be discussed.
