Photoinitiated electron collection in mixed-metal supramolecular complexes
- Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ., Blacksburg, VA (United States)
The authors have prepared a series of mixed-metal complexes that contain two light absorbers (LA) covalently attached to an electron collector (EC) of the form [(bpy){sub 2}Fu(BL)]{sub 2}MCl{sub 2}{sup n+} (bpy = 2.2`-bipyridine, BL = polyazine bridging ligand, and M = Rh(III), Ir(III) and Os(II)). Spectroscopic studies of these systems indicate that they all possess a lowest lying excited state that is MLCT in nature and terminates on the bridging ligand. Electrochemical studies have indicated that these systems are capable of storing multiple reducing equivalents. Separate catalytic studies on the [M(BL){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}]{sup +} systems of Ir and Rh indicate that the reduced form of these complexes can act as catalysts for the multielectron reduction of carbon dioxide. Photochemical studies of these systems in the presence of a sacrifical electron donor (ED) indicate that these systems can be photochemically converted into their two electron reduced form. These systems therefore function as the LA-EC-LA central core of a photochemical molecular device for photoinitiated electron collection. Details of these studies will be presented.
