Developmental forestry in Karnataka--An overview

Population pressure, a reversal of the policy of forest reservation set up when forest management was started in Karnataka in 1860, and industrial and agricultural development have led to a serious shortage of timber. To satisfy the needs of urban development for timber and pulp, of rural people for land, fuelwood and forest products and of environmental protection, well designed and managed plantations are necessary. The extent and types of tree plantations in Karnataka are reviewed as a background to the research being undertaken into growth and water use of eucalypt species.
