Grain boundaries are an important element of the microstructures of polycrystals. They are known to influence the properties of polycrystalline materials and have become an object of extensive investigations of both a theoretical and experimental nature. Early models of the effect of grain boundaries concentrated attention on the description of their geometry. This resulted in the formulation of the Hall-Petch relationship and its numerous modifications. Indirectly these models lead to the development of procedures for the characterization of the geometry of grains and grain boundaries in terms of their size and shape. In recent years it has been recognized that individual grain boundaries in polycrystals differ in their structure and properties. As a result, the simple geometrical approach does not permit a full explanation of the properties of polycrystals. The concept of grain boundary engineering has been introduced and with it the need for a more precise description of the physical properties of grain boundaries in polycrystals.
