The Yucca Mountain Project has recently completed a conceptual design for a nuclear waste repository at the Yucca Mountain site. This conceptual design provides a reference configuration to be used during the site characterization program to evaluate the suitability of that site for a repository. The surface and underground facilities have been designed to account for the unique topographic, structural, and hydrologic setting at Yucca Mountain. This allows inclined ramps to be used for access to the underground facilities and for the repository to be located in the unsaturated zone above the water table. Subsequent design activities will provide for more detailed specification of design features and operational modes for the repository facilities. This paper will summarize the basic features of the conceptual design and relate those features to the site characterization program for the Yucca Mountain site.
