  • Photovoltaics (PV) is a modern energy technology that makes use of semiconductor materials to convert sunlight directly to electricity. The idea of thin film technology is to produce truly low-cost PV devices by using pennies worth of active semiconductor materials.

  • A success oriented research and development plan for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) leading to a commercial demonstration reactor by the year 2010 has been generated. The RandD plan was developed by using the unique approach of combining an ICF-experienced project team with technical forecast information obtained through interviews with experts in ICF-relevant technologies. The technical forecast data were analyzed with a logic network formalism to determine preferred RandD options to reach the aggressive 2010 goal. The application of the developed technical forecasting techniques has proved to be a useful planning tool.

  • In Asia and North America research and development on a linear collider detector has followed complementary paths to that in Europe. Among the developments in the US has been the conception of a detector built around silicon tracking, which relies heavily on a pixel (CCD) vertex detector, and employs a silicon tungsten calorimeter. Since this detector is quite different from the TESLA detector, we describe it here, along with some of the sub-system specific R&D in these regions.
