After the oil embargo of the late 1970s, there was a considerable amount of interest about utilizing battery storage for load leveling in the utility industry. This type of load leveling application required relatively large storage capacities with discharge duration of 4 to 8 hours and, as a general rule, was not cost competitive unless some unique circumstances emerged. However, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have some highly desirable characteristics; siting flexibility, size flexibility, and fast charge/discharge response. These desirable characteristics make the BESS suitable for other applications in the electric power system.
