The use of inelastic finite element analysis to evaluate primary stresses in redundant structures subjected to sustained loads was discussed in previous work. The present paper extends this evaluation method to structures where the load varies in time. Conditions of shake down are analyzed to establish limits on combined stresses which prevent the accumulation of incremental deformations at structural discontinuities. The analyses are applied to the benchmark model considered in a cited reference in order to illustrate a practical application.
