The Committee on Three Dimensional Finite Element Method Stress Evaluation has been organized under the Design Division of the Japan Pressure Vessel Research Council. The committee mainly discusses stress categorization of results obtained by three dimensional Finite Element Analysis (3D-FEA). The objectives of the committee are: (1) to define stress evaluation sections, and primary and secondary stresses when components with complex geometries (e.g. non-symmetric nozzles) are analyzed by 3D-FEA, and (2) to propose general procedures of stress analysis for 3D structures through sample analysis. Before getting into the 3D-FEA of the structure, round robin analyses are performed for a torispherical head with a conical transition. Following the round robin analyses, components with 3D geometry are going to be analyzed. Two kinds of geometries, such as perforated spherical head and nozzles, are selected and subject to analysis. Both limit analysis and plastic analysis will be performed and the collapse load obtained. By comparing both results it is intended that guidelines with regard to stress categorization will be proposed.
