On a type of skin effect in small metal particles in the high-frequency spectral range
- Research Center of Applied Problems of Electrodynamics, Moscow (Russian Federation)
Using experimental values of the specific dynamic polarizability of small spherical particles of silver, gold, nickel, and chromium with radii from 0.9 to 8.0 nm, the particle refractive n an absorption k indices were calculated in the {lambda}=0.2-1.1 {mu}m spectral range. The determined values of n and k, were used to estimate the skin-layer depth {delta} and the velocity of light v in the particle. A conclusion about the normal type of skin effect in the studied small metal particles was drawn from the comparison of {delta} and v with, respectively, the free path of conduction electrons in the particle and their velocity on the Fermi surface. The validity of the use of the well-known relationship {alpha}=3({epsilon}-{epsilon}{sub m})/({epsilon}+2{epsilon}{sub m}) between the specific dynamic polarizability {alpha}={alpha}{sub 1}-i{alpha}{sub 2} and permittivity {epsilon}={epsilon}{sub 1}-i{epsilon}{sub 2} of small spherical particle (located in a medium with permittivity {epsilon}{sub m} was substantiated in the case of ultradisperse particle volumes of the chosen metals. 29 refs., 4 tabs.
