Extraction of Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), and Gd(III) nitrates by mixtures of di-iso-octylmethylphosphonate and trialkylmethylammonium nitrate from aqueous salt solutions

The extraction of trivalent rare-earth metal (Pr-Gd) nitrates by mixtures of di-iso-octylmethylphosphonate (DOMP) and trialkylmethylammonium nitrate (TAMAN) in various ratios is studied at 298.15 K and pH 2. Compounds of formula Ln(NO{sub 3}){sub 3}{center_dot}3S, Ln(NO{sub 3}){sub 3}{center_dot}iA (i = 2,3), and Ln(NO{sub 3}){sub 3}{center_dot}jA{center_dot}(3 - j)S (j = 1,2), where A is TAMAN and S is DOMP, are formed in the organic phase. The extraction constants of the mixed-ligand metal solvates obey statistical laws and decrease in the order Pr > Nd > Sm > Eu > Gd.
