A method is described for solving the problem of calculating the electromagnetic field excited by an a.c. winding around a nonmagnetic cylinder with or without a hole and of limited height. The result of the pertinent computer calculations were interpreted with the aid of holographs of the relative signal. It was found that the procedure can be used to calculate the signal of a through eddy-current transducer with various cylinder configurations. When a infinitely long cylinder in a through transducer is replaced by a cylinder with a length three times its radius the resulting error is less than 10%. It was also found that a direct transistion can be made from the theory of a superposed transducer to the theory of a through transducer.
