The author considers the case where one has an open magnetosphere. This requires that the magnetopause cross open field lines, resulting in what is referred to as a rotational discontinuity. This is modeled most commonly as an Alfven wave. The author proposes that to successfully extend this model to the magnetopause tailward of the oval, it is necessary to model the tailward magnetopause as formed by a separate Alfven wave with a different helicity. He then further discusses the implications of such a two branch model for the magnetopause.
