This paper provides an overview of the potential for using liquid biofuels for electricity, transportation fuel, and chemicals production. Information is provided on the types of biomass (other than corn) that can be used as feedstock and end uses for biofuels. National estimates of the potential to produce liquid biofuels are provided. The paper then focuses on the alcohol fuel ethanol because biomass-to-ethanol conversion technologies are close to commercialization and are projected to have production costs (without subsidies) competitive with gasoline by the year 2000. Results are provided from a recent assessment of biomass feedstocks for ethanol production in the 11-state Northeast region.
