Ceramic-matrix composites by a preceramic polymer route
- TONEN Corporation, Saitama-ken (Japan)
- Ube Industries, Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)
High strength ceramic matrix composites(CMC) were obtained by two groups independently by a preceramic polymer-impregnation & pyrolysis (PCPI) method. TONEN improved a thermosetting infiltrate, Methylhydorocooligosilazane to result in three-point flexural strengths as high as 1250, 627 and 503 MPa for the UD, 2D and multi-directional Woven composites, respectively. The consolidated polytitanocarbosilane(PTC) as matrix precursor for CMC using a 3-D woven fabric of Si-Ti-C-O fiber. Tensile strength and ultimate strain to failure of PTC-CMC at room temperature reach 410 MPa and 0.85%, respectively. Tensile test at 1200{degrees}C shows a possibility of maintaining the room temperature strength. The PCPI method should provide high performance CMC components, if the oxidation stability would be further improved.
