Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber was synthesized from polycarbosilane (PCS) fiber by heat treatment after the electron beam irradiation curing. The reaction mechanisms for SiC fiber synthesis during heat treatment were investigated by gas analysis, free radical detection, and mechanical properties measurements. There was two steps in the major reaction; first step was 800-1200 K, where the chemical reactions related to Si atoms proceeded as the cleavage of Si-CH{sub 3} and Si-H, and second step was 1000-1600 K, where the reactions related to C atoms proceeded.
