Title: Contribution to the Study of Recrystallization of Uranium Quenched from the Beta Phase

The large, irregular alpha grains of uranium quenched from the beta phase become uniform equiaxed grains when annealed in the alpha phase. This marked change in grain structure is illustrated in Figure 1. The grain structure after annealing resembles that obtained by recrystallization of a cold worked metal. If the process by which the beta-quenched grain structure changes to an equiaxed structure is related to the process of recrystallization of cold worked uranium, there must be a source of strain energy to drive the process. The kinetics of the process should be similar and the activation energy in the same range as for recrystallization of cold worked uranium.
