Title: JDAQ: a Java based software package for multi-channel data acquisition

Abstract

The source code for the Java Data Acquisition suite provides interfaces to the JLab built USB FPGA ADC across a LAN network. Each jDaq node provides ListMode data from JLab built detector systems and readouts.

  • The Locomotive Data Acquisition Package (LDAP) is a complete data acquisition system designed specifically for use on board railroad locomotives to study locomotive performance while in normal over-the-road operations. It is a semi-portable system requiring only limited installation support commonly found in railroad shops. The system may be applied to study energy conservation measures as well as train dynamics. This volume describes a Locomotive Analysis Software Package consisting of 12 software programs which may be used for data verification, data reduction, and analysis of data collected by the Locomotive Data Acquisition Package. Baseline data is provided to illustrate the usemore » of the analytical software which has been developed. While the programming has been developed for use on a DEC PDP-11 computer the language and format is suited to use on other computer systems.« less

  • The Interactive Data Entry System (IDES) is a software package which greatly assists in designing and storing forms to be used for the directed acquisition of data. Objective of this package is to provide a viable man/machine interface to any comprehensive data base. This report provides a technical description of the software and can be used as a user's manual.
  • In this experiential paper we report on lessons learned during the development ofthe data acquisition software for the IceCube project - specifically, how to effectively address the unique challenges presented by a distributed, collaborative, multi-institutional, multi-disciplined project such as this. While development progress in software projects is often described solely in terms of technical issues, our experience indicates that non- and quasi-technical interactions play a substantial role in the effectiveness of large software development efforts. These include: selection and management of multiple software development methodologies, the effective useof various collaborative communication tools, project management structure and roles, and the impactmore » and apparent importance of these elements when viewed through the differing perspectives of hardware, software, scientific and project office roles. Even in areas clearly technical in nature, success is still influenced by non-technical issues that can escape close attention. In particular we describe our experiences on software requirements specification, development methodologies and communication tools. We make observations on what tools and techniques have and have not been effective in this geographically disperse (including the South Pole) collaboration and offer suggestions on how similarly structured future projects may build upon our experiences.« less
  • A software package was developed to replace the software provided by LakeShore for their model 7300 vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Several problems with the original software`s functionality caused this group to seek a new software package. The new software utilizes many features that were unsupported in the LakeShore software, including a more functional step mode, point averaging mode, vector moment measurements, and calibration for field offset. The developed software interfaces the VSM through a menu driven graphical user interface, and bypasses the VSM`s on board processor leaving control of the VSM up to the software. The source code for thismore » software is readily available to any one. By having the source, the experimentalist has full control of data acquisition and can add routines specific to their experiment.« less
