The triggered vacuum switch is designed to switch submicrosecond current pulses of up to 10 kA at a frequency of up to 1 kHz and a voltage of up to 25 kV. The current rate at the leading edge is up to 10{sup 11} A/sec and the minimum switch-on delay time is 40-50 nsec. Given a two-stage erosion triggering circuit, the energy losses at the initial stage of the discharge are considerably smaller than in common vacuum switches. The minimum energy of the trigger at which a stable discharge is actuated in the device under a voltage of {+-}(0.5-20) kV applied across its main electrodes is {approx}10 mJ. The switching characteristic of the device under a voltage of both polarities have been studied.
