Waste Storage and the Research programmes that have been, and are being, carried out in the United Kingdom, are driven by national policy concerning waste disposal, availability or projected availability of disposal facilities, and nuclear fuel cycle activities in the UK. Nuclear power production in the UK generates wastes, but the greater bulk of waste arises from reprocessing irradiated fuel to recover Uranium and Plutonium for re-use in conventional reactor fuel, or as mixed oxide fuel (MOX) that utilizes recovered Plutonium in LWRs. UK Waste Categories have some similarity to US categories, but historical definitions and disposal practices have resulted in a classification that does not yield a direct equivalence with US classifications. This presentation, therefore, describes waste storage practices and plans in the UK and research projects to support them, for waste forms that have some equivalence with US categories.
