We have measured the polarization rates of lines emitted after single-electron capture occurring during Ar{sup 8+}-Li collisions at an impact energy of 80 keV. In order to obtain information on the final {ital m}{sub {ital l}} values which are populated in the electron-capture process, we have also calculated the polarization rates from the {ital nlm}{sub {ital l}} distributions determined by using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The good agreement which is obtained between the experimental and the calculated polarization rates indicates the reliability of the CTMC method which predicts that {ital m}{sub {ital l}}=0, {plus_minus}1, and {plus_minus}2 are preferentially populated by the electron-capture process.
