YbTa crystallizes in the hexagonal P-6m2 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Yb is bonded to six equivalent Yb and six equivalent Ta atoms to form YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra that share corners with eighteen equivalent YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, edges with six equivalent YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, edges with twelve equivalent TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, faces with eight equivalent YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, and faces with twelve equivalent TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra. All Yb–Yb bond lengths are 3.10 Å. All Yb–Ta bond lengths are 3.24 Å. Ta is bonded to six equivalent Yb and six equivalent Ta atoms to form TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra that share corners with eighteen equivalent TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, edges with six equivalent TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, edges with twelve equivalent YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, faces with eight equivalent TaYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra, and faces with twelve equivalent YbYb6Ta6 cuboctahedra. All Ta–Ta bond lengths are 3.10 Å.
