Strengthening of aluminium-rich aluminium-lithium single crystals by spherical, coherent particles of the L1{sub 2}-long-range ordered {delta}{prime}-phase has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The total critical resolved shear stress {tau}{sub t} has been measured as a function of the radius r and the volume fraction f of the {delta}{prime}-particles. r and f covered the ranges 0.0--17.6 nm and 0.0--0.11, respectively. The {delta}{prime}-particles` contribution {tau}{sub p} and {tau}{sub t} is analyzed with reference to a model, which had originally been developed for the description of the strengthening effect of L1{sub 2}-long-range ordered {gamma}{prime}-particles in nickel-base superalloys. The experimental data {tau}{sub p}(r,f) of the present aluminium-lithium single crystals are well represented by this model. The specific antiphase boundary energy of the {delta}{prime}-particles has been found to be 0.070{+-}0.020 J/m{sup 2}. This value refers to {l_brace}111{r_brace}-planes.
