Direct evidence for combustion reaction on TiNi/TiC composites formation by mechanical alloying
- Academia Sinica, Shenyang (China)
Since Koch et al. reported on the amorphization of Ni-Nb powder mixture by mechanical alloying (MA), many publications have appeared in recent years which describe the phases resulting from MA or ball milling (BM), but the underlying mechanisms are still in controversy. Yermakov et al. suggested that the amorphization in Co{sub x}Y{sub 1{minus}x} intermetallics was attributed to the formation of local melts produced by the colliding balls, which solidified rapidly to from microscopic amorphous region. However, Schwarz et al. concluded that this process does not involve melting. A commonly accepted picture is a combination of deformation, leading to a reduction of the lamellar thickness, and layer diffusion. Recently, Atzmon suggested the explosive reaction as being a possible mechanism for the MA of elements with large heat of formation, according to his experiments on ball milling in NiAl system.
