This investigation explored the factors responsible for the wide variations in the notch-rupture properties of wrought superalloy 718. Microstructural characterization of selected failed samples, using optical and transmission electron microscopy, revealed that the considerable variations occurred due to nonuniform distribution of the delta phase and reduced size of the {gamma}{double_prime} strengthening phase.
