Sm3V is alpha bismuth trifluoride structured and crystallizes in the cubic Fm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Sm sites. In the first Sm site, Sm is bonded to four equivalent Sm and four equivalent V atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing SmSm4V4 tetrahedra. All Sm–Sm bond lengths are 3.34 Å. All Sm–V bond lengths are 3.34 Å. In the second Sm site, Sm is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight equivalent Sm and six equivalent V atoms. All Sm–V bond lengths are 3.86 Å. V is bonded in a distorted body-centered cubic geometry to fourteen Sm atoms.
