When a natural rubber bearing is adopted in a seismic isolation system, a damper system is necessary to absorb vibration energy of earthquakes. An elasto-plastic damper consisting of four spiral steel bars has been developed and applied to about ten seismic isolation buildings. Sufficient experiments and analysis have been conducted to qualify the damper for actual applications in seismically isolated buildings. However, the fatigue characteristics of the product have not been fully demonstrated. Therefore, the authors carried out an experimental study to evaluate static or dynamic characteristics including fatigue characteristics of the damper.
