FSM -- the Field Signature Method -- is a relatively new method for continuous monitoring of corrosion and cracking of pipes, pressurized vessels and storage tanks. The method is now being developed for monitoring of stress corrosion cracking of welds in ammonia storage tanks. Laboratory tests and computer modeling have been utilized to establish a basis for interpretation of the measured signals in terms of crack sizes and, and to determine the minimum crack sizes detectable for a given tank wall thickness and type of weld.
