Preliminary testing of a Utex ore sample (AEC-211) was described in Amenability Test Reports AEC-211.1 and 211. 2 issued in July and September 1953. In order to obtain maximum recovery of both uranium and vanadium, the early tests were restricted to acid curing of the raw or calcined ore under a variety of conditions. Best extraction, 97 percent of the uranium and 94 percent of the vanadium, was obtained by calcining 10-mesh ore at 550° C. for 2 hours, pugging with 200 pounds of water and 700 pounds of sulfuric acid per ton, and curing at 100° C. for 16 hours. This report describes the more comprehensive work done on a 10-ton sample of ore to provide data for evaluating alternative procedures and permit process selection and planning of pilot plant operations. Hot and cold acid leaches and acid cures were made on both raw and calcined ore. Salt roasting and carbonate leaching were also tried. Under suitable conditions, about 95 percent of the uranium was extracted by either hot or cold acid leaching or acid curing. Tests simulating the Climax procedure also extracted 95 percent of the uranium. A 72-hour carbonate-bicarbonate leach dissolved 90 percent of the uranium. Vanadium extractions were more divergent. Highest extraction was 95 to 97 percent by acid curing. Hot acid leaching dissolved 80 to 84 percent and cold leaches 30 to 45 percent of the vanadium. A hot leach with both MnO2 and Na2SiF6 extracted 92 percent of the vanadium. Only 37 percent was extracted in the 72-hour carbonate-bicarbonate leach. The simulated Climax process dissolved 92 percent of the vanadium.
