GRI baseline projection of US energy supply and demand. 1996 edition

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:128190
Strategic planning and establishment of budget priorities for the Gas Research Institute (GRI) Research Development and Demonstration (RD&D) program requires an understanding of the energy future in which gas technologies must compete. The annual GRI Baseline Projection of U.S. Energy Supply and Demand is a major element in the internal planning cycle leading to the development of GRI`s research and development program. The baseline projection is developed independently by GRI using publicly available data and a framework of commercially available models that GRI has modified over several years. It is not derived from the views of GRI member companies. It represents GRI`s management view of the most likely future based on current regulations, legislation, and national energy policy. This paper summarizes the 1996 Edition of the GRI Baseline Projection of U.S. Energy Supply and Demand. It includes a detailed set of summary tables describing the 1996 Edition of the GRI Baseline Projection. Last year, considerable doubt was expressed about the projected growth in residential gas demand and the strong growth in gas demand for electricity generation in the 1995 edition of the projection. As a result, this summary addresses these two important sectors in more detail. Essential to achieving the robust gas demand growth projected in the 1996 edition of the projection is the availability of competitively priced gas supplies. The paper also presents a summary gas supply and transportation outlook which highlights the key premises driving the outlook in light of industry results over the last decade.
