The authors have carried out a theoretical determination of the electron impact dissociation cross section of H{sup +}{sub 3} from 15eV to 21eV via excitation of the two lowest ({sup 3}E, {sup 1}E) excited electronic states using the complex Kohn variational method. The calculations employed extensive multi-configuration target wave functions that accuratley reproduced the energy levels and transition dipoles of the ground and excited states of the ions. All open channels were included explicitly in the scattering calculation. Closed channel effects were included via an ab initio optical potential. Modifications of the total excitation cross section due to the effect of zero-point nuclear motion of the target were found to be significant.
