Thin Californumium-252-fission sources are now commercially available. The fission fragment spectrum for these sources shows a heavy fragment group at around 140 Atomic Mass Units (AMU) and a light group at approximately 105 AMU. The light group has a mean energy of approximately 100 MeV while conservation of momentum limits the heavy group to about 85 MeV. These dE/dX measurements were made with surface barrier detectors and standard NIM electronics and a personal computer analyzer. The experimental values of the stopping power was obtained from the measured energy loss of the fission fragments in five different foil thicknesses each of Aluminum and Silver. The results are favorably compared to calculations making use of the semiempirical theoretical formula of Lindhard and Mueller.
