Recently, a procedure for constructing a thermodynamic free energy of one-component fluids was formulated that incorporates the crossover from singular thermodynamic behavior at the vapor-liquid critical point. By implementing the theory of Griffiths and Wheeler the authors have extended this procedure to binary mixtures near the vapor-liquid critical line. The resulting thermodynamic free energy yields a satisfactory representation of the thermodynamic properties of fluid mixtures in a substantial region around the critical line, as demonstrated by a comparison with experimental data for mixtures of carbon dioxide and ethane.
