Arc co-evaporation of graphite rods mixed with metallic elements and alloys has been investigated to explore the possibility of achieving substitutions for carbon in the C{sub 60} structure, and/or insertion within the C{sub 60} spheres or in sites between the C60 spheres in the crystaline solid. An experimental arrangement for this purpose will be described and the results obtained with several metals in the 5th and 6th rows of the periodic table such as Sr, Pd, Ag, Cd, Ba, La, Ta, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi etc. will be presented. The effect of various ambient conditions, e.g. chemical composition of the gas surrounding the arc and its pressure, will also be discussed.
