High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are used in off-gas process streams to prevent the release of radioactive, transuranic, and hazardous materials to the environment. Filter leaching trials with hot nitric acid have been successfully conducted at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant to remove the transuranic material. The test results show that a modified filter leaching system will be able to successfully remove both hazardous radiological constituents to meet RCRA disposal levels. Based upon the success of the filter leach trials, the existing leaching system will be modified to provide a safe, simple, effective, and operationally flexible filter leading system.
