For emplacement of large capacity multi-barrier waste packages in the high-level waste repository, the limiting thermal criterion will be a cladding temperature of 350 C for the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies. Three methods to estimate clad temperatures inside a canister are outlined. The use of a finite element model of a SNF assembly to generate effective conductivities for predicting peak temperatures is briefly described. The U.S. Department of Energy/Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management will use the effective thermal conductivities to analyze waste package designs.
