The technical considerations related to the role of colloids in the release and transport of radionuclides and their potential impact on the performance of a geologic high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repository are discussed. In addition to existing colloids in groundwaters, the sources of colloids in a repository are spent nuclear fuels, vitrified wastes, degradation products of Engineered Barrier System, materials introduced during the construction and operational phase of the repository, and the geologic formation. Areas of technical uncertainties related to the role of colloids have been identified.
