UK Nirex Limited is responsible for the development of a deep repository for disposal of the United Kingdom`s intermediate-level wastes. An area near Sellafield, West Cumbria was chosen as the focus for extensive investigations. This paper outlines the phases planned for the construction of an underground rock characterization facility. The facility will provide data on geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the potential deep repository rocks and overlying strata. Facility construction is a major step in the site characterization program.
