A diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopic (drifts) study of the reaction of NO{sub 2} with NaBr
- Univ. of California, Irvine, CA (United States)
The heterogenous reactions of nitrogen oxides such as NO{sub 2} and N{sub 2}O{sub 5} with NaBr in seasalt aerosols are of potential importance in tropospheric chemistry. Thus they form photochemically unstable gaseous bromine compounds such as BrNO in the case of the NO{sub 2} reaction, and BrNO{sub 2} in the N{sub 2}O{sub 5} reaction. Photolysis of the BrNO and BrNO{sub 2} forms bromine atoms which have the potential to initiate various atmospheric raections including catalytic ozone destruction in the troposphere. Results of the first experimental study on the kinetics of the NaBr{sup +}-NO{sub 2} reaction using DRIFTS will be presented. The reaction was found to be second order in NO{sub 2}, suggesting that the reacting molecule is the NO{sub 2} dimer, N{sub 2}O{sub 4}, as it has been observed before in the NO{sub 2}+NaCl reaction. A preliminary value for the reaction probability, {phi}{sub N2O4} = 1.3 x 10{sup -4} was obtained. The possible role of the NO{sub 2} + NaBr reaction in atmospheric chemistry will be discussed.
