We report results on optimisation of the third order nonlinear optical properties of PPV films obtained by the precursor route. There is a strong dependence of the modulus of the nonlinear refractive index n{sub 2} measured by degenerate four-wave mixing using 125 fs pulses at 800 nm on the spectral characteristics: e.g. the position and shape of the absorption maximum, and the values of absorption coefficients as well as refractive indices of TE and TM modes of PPV films measured at 633 nm and 810 nm. Films were prepared from the precursor polymer: poly(xylilidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) synthesised using different combinations of the solvent and base during the polymerization. Precursor films were thermally converted into the conjugated polymer under identical conditions. We observed an enhancement of the nonlinearity by about an order of magnitude with the shift of the absorption maximum from 380 to 450 mn and a marked increase of the absorption coefficients. The enhancement was interpreted as related to the different capability of the precursor to achieve longer conjugation due to different concentration of chemical and physical defects present in the precursor polymer prepared under various conditions.
