Design strategies for the synthesis of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores with either large positive or negative first hyperpolarizabilities will be described. In particular it will be shown how by the correct combination of end groups the degree of ground-state polarization can be tuned and how this relates to the magnitude and the sign of the NLO response. The relevance of such molecules for poled polymer application will be explained.
