The NMR relaxation behavior of tributyl phosphate in the clay hectorite has been investigated to obtain information on the mobility of this ligating agent in the clay. Ultimately, the interaction of TBP and the nitrate salt of europium is of interest. Such information is vital for environmental remediation studies. The results of the longitudinal relaxation time (T{sub 1}) studies of TBP in the clay hectorite reveal a dramatic variation of T{sub 1} with temperature. The T{sub 1} values obtained for the temperatures 240 K, 260 K, 290 K, 326 K and 330 K are 0.47, 0.03, 0.25, 0.27 and 0.47 s, respectively.
