Reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry has identified lanthanide oxide cluster ions--Ln{sub m}O{sub n}{sup +} with m{<=}564--as abundant products of excimer laser ablation into vacuum of lanthanide oxalates. The observed cluster stoichiometries reveal significant chemical distinctions among the lanthanides. Ablation of oxalate mixtures has allowed the identification of corresponding bimetallic oxide cluster ions, Ln,Ln`{sub s}O{sub t}{sup +} with r+s{<=}11. The compositions and abundance distributions of the mixed lanthanide species illuminate both formation and bonding/structural aspects of this family of clusters. Time-variable ion sampling has elucidated plume dynamics and clustering processes.
