Alumino-silicate gels were prepared by doping Al cations into water based silica sols. These materials take advantage of the microstructure derived from silica gels and the modified surface provided from the Al component. An Al/Si composition larger than a 12/100 atomic ratio obstructs the normal gelling process and produces a powder after drying. Al cations are isomorphically substituted for Si atoms on the surface and create a strong negatively charged surface over the entire pH range.
