Environmental constraints on the use of traditional catalysts have attracted considerable interest on solid, strongly acidic materials, suitable for catalyzing hydrocarbon reactions which are of importance to many fields, such as the preparation of synfuels. Zirconia sulfate is known to catalyze the isomerization of light paraffins under mild conditions, and the addition of Pt has been shown to enhance its activity and stability. In this work we report the one-pot preparation of Pt-containing zirconia sulfate catalysts by sol-gel technique, starting from a Zr alkoxide to which the proper amounts of H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} and H{sub 2}PtCl{sub 6} solutions have been added before gelation. The solvent has been then evaporated in an autoclave at supercritical temperature and pressure. As a reference, a ZrO{sub 2}-SO{sub 4} system has been prepared with the same procedure. These catalysts turned out to be active in the isomerization of n-butane at 250{degrees}C in the presence of H{sub 2}. No deactivation was observed after 52 h on stream.
