ESR study of photoexcited C{sub 60} film
- National Tsing Hua Univ. (Taiwan, Province of China)
In literature, C{sub 60} thin film was found to exhibit nonlinear photoconductivity, and nonlinear optical response. Under strong light irradiation, photopolymerization of the fullerene thin film can also occur. We carried out an ESR experiment to elucidate these unusual properties of C{sub 60} thin film. Under UV light irradiation, an ESR band with a g value of 2.0025 grows gradually as a function of time. This ESR band was assigned to the C{sub 60}{sup +.}- on the basis of its g value. When light is off, the C{sub 60}{sup +.} band remains exist and is stable for more a month at room temperature. The temperature effect on the ESR line width was also studied. The mechanism of the formation of C{sub 60}{sup +.} and its correlation to photopolymerization and nonlinear photoconductivity will be discussed.
