Excess heat during electrolysis of 1 M LiOD in fuel cell type closed cell

Conference ·
OSTI ID:126677
Electrolysis of 1M LiOD was conducted using Pd Cathodes from various sources in a fuel cell type closed cell using a fuel cell anode. The cathode loading by deuterium, D/Pd, and excess heat were monitored simultaneously as a function of current density from the pressure decrease of D2 gas in the cell and by monitoring cathode temperature as a function of electrolytic input power, respectively. Up to 35% excess heat was recorded for D/Pd > 0.80 - 0.84 with a threshold current around 100 {approximately} 200 mA/cm{sub 2}.
